A teacher, a storyteller, and a father figure. The man who wore stripes and built futures.

On July 9, 2022, we gathered, laughed, and reminisced. We celebrated a man whose presence still echoes through the corridors of Ruai Primary School. This is Mr. Mungai, former Senior Teacher, master of Kiswahili, Music, Science, and Business Education.

He joined Ruai Primary in 1986 and left in 1992.
Leaving behind chalkboard lessons and unforgettable jingles of his key bunch. A legacy was stitched into our hearts.

Yes, he still wears those iconic striped suits. Yes, the keys still jingle with flair. Some things never change. And honestly, we’re glad they don’t.

After Ruai, Mr. Mungai served for 23 years as Program Director at SOS Children’s Villages in Eldoret. From teaching timetables to transforming lives. His journey remained rooted in building futures and restoring hope.
That same fatherly spirit that nurtured us in our early years continued to shape hundreds more.

During our gathering, Mr. Mungai shared his heart with us. A speech filled with wisdom, humour, and reflection. He reminded us of the power of resilience. He spoke of the quiet dignity of service.
He emphasized the value of remembering where we came from.
We also took time to gift Mwalimu. A small token of appreciation from the many hearts he shaped.

And because no reunion is complete without breaking bread. We shared a hearty lunch together. The laughter, the storytelling, the cheeky jokes from “Class of ’87” and beyond. It was like time never passed.

A special highlight was the brief sermon shared among us. A reminder of God’s faithfulness through seasons. We reflected on Daniel 6:10 “He knelt and prayed, just as he had done before.”
Through every stage of life, prayer and humility have been key. Quite fitting, considering the actual keys Mr. Mungai still carries! 😄

And yes, love is real.
Mwalimu married a beautiful nurse straight from Nursing School. They’ve been together for 40 years. Who needs Netflix when we have real-life love stories like this?

The day ended with group photos per class. A chaotic and heart-warming roll call of familiar faces and forgotten nicknames.

We laughed, joked, and remembered the moments. The punishments, the praise, the school songs, and the stories. Most of all, we celebrated the man who helped raise us.
Thank you, Mwalimu. It was so good to be home with you.

✨Here’s to the jingling keys, the striped suits, and a life well-lived in service of others.
