Child Suicide, A Society’s Concern

Death by suicide is brutal… and most gruesome when it’s a child.

Check my feature article on the People Daily, published on August 25, 2021.

You can download and share a pdf version of the story below.

In 2019, Kenya’s annual suicide rate was around 320 cases (KNBS). Between March and June 2021, close to 500 suicides were reported (by DCI), the youngest being 9 and the oldest 76 years old.

Suicide is a subject close to my heart. My late Mum was suicidal, her mother having hanged herself in 1974, after three attempts.

Why would children take their innocent lives? Is it substance abuse, gambling, Exams or COVID-induced stress? It is difficult to comprehend that children could even think of killing themselves.
