Mwalimu Forever: Honoring Mrs. Njoroge with Laughter, Songs & Deep Gratitude

Once a teacher touches your life, even Kyuk tantrums become treasured memories.

Artistic impression of Mrs. Njoroge, in our little eyes

This is Mrs. Njoroge. The legend. The matriarch. The teacher who once juggled Home Science, English, CRE, Maths and P.E without breaking a sweat. Or her temper, unless you really pushed her.

She served the Kenyan classroom with passion and poise for 36 years (1969–2005). That’s not just a teaching career; that’s an era! We visited her on June 1, 2024. And though she’d been retired for 19 years, her warmth, wit, and beauty still glow like it’s 1992.

The room at her recent celebration was filled with nostalgia and joy. There was just enough mischief to make us feel like pupils again.

Celebrating her gumboot days 🤣

Mrs. Njoroge, always full of surprises, invited a special guest. The guest was the Nairobi City Education Officer who helped process her TSC transfer to Ruai Primary in 1992.

Now here’s the kicker: Ruai may be within Nairobi city limits. Back then, people whispered about it like it was Garissa with a blackboard!

After losing her husband in the ’90s, she raised five sons singlehandedly. She continued to show up for hundreds of pupils like us. That’s superhero status.

Of course, no tribute would be complete without remembering her classroom expressions.

Whenever we misbehaved, she’d switch from English to fluent, fiery Kikuyu. This switch somehow made us laugh even when we were trembling. Her tagline? The unforgettable proverb:

“You can take the donkey to the river, but you can’t force it to drink water.”

I brought her a jar of honey

How true. And yet, Mwalimu, you made many of us want to drink. Knowledge, values, discipline, and hope.

Tokens of appreciation: a portrait and gift envelope

We gathered, hugged, cracked jokes, shared throwback stories. And yes, we sang. Being the devout Catholic choir member that she is, we closed the day with a chorus of:

Niletee maua nikiwa hai

“Úkáí mwóné ùría Ngai ííkítè” 🙋‍♀️
(Come and see what God has done!)

Indeed, we have seen it. In you. Through you. Because of you.
