Of Pinches and Psalms: Celebrating Mrs. Mwirigi

When your teacher was part disciplinarian. Part choir director. Part Holy Spirit. And fully unforgettable.

There are teachers you remember vaguely, and then… there’s Mrs. Mwirigi.

Our English and CRE teacher at Ruai Primary School. She retired in 2003, after 15 faithful years of service.

Two decades later, she still lives large in our hearts. And yes, in our stomachs! Ask anyone who survived her famous disciplinary pinches.

Good to be home with you

We gathered. Former pupils turned adults. With bills, responsibilities, and grey hairs of our own. To say a heartfelt thank you. It wasn’t just a visit. It was a pilgrimage to one of the anchors of our becoming.

A feast and childhood reconnection

Because Mrs. Mwirigi wasn’t just a teacher.

She was a presence.

Poses of pleasure

A spiritual compass wrapped in a firm voice. A master of the Queen’s English and the Holy Scriptures.

A woman who taught us to diagram sentences by day and sing “Mine, Mine, Mine, Jesus is Mine!” with gusto at parade.

Looking back, it’s almost poetic.

She mirrored the traits of the Holy Spirit we read about in class. Teacher. Comforter. Counsellor. But also, Corrector. With a stomach pinch that could alter your behaviour and your theology.

And yet, behind the pinch was a pulse. Of grace, deep care, and unshakable faith. She reminded us we were more than our mistakes or report cards.

She reminded us we belonged.

Her surprise birthday celebration

On this day…

We found her not diminished by time, but refined by it.

Graceful, composed, still sharp, and still a few steps ahead of us. She still teaches. With her presence, her memory, her calm.

Short speech to the group

We had gifts…

Small symbols of our gratitude.

For the enormous investment she made in us. But truly, it’s we who received the gift: her time, her smile, her stories.

Mrs. Mwirigi, thank you for showing us that teaching is ministry.

That correction and compassion can live in the same classroom. That songs can carry faith, and faith can carry generations.

It was so good to be home with you, Mwalimu.

And yes, after all these years, Jesus is still ours too.

Sermon and snaps

“Do your best to come to me quickly.” 2 Timothy 4:9 We did. And it mattered.
