On Sunday, October 19, 2025 I preached @GPT Hebron City. A message that has gripped my heart for months, Still Standing: When Pain Deepens, But God Remains.

Opening Story: When the Light Fades

I began with a question: What do you do when the light that once guided you suddenly grows dim? When the same God who once blessed you, now seems silent?

That’s where Job’s story begins. At the edge of understanding and the center of trust.

Job was the “greatest man in the East”.

Wealthy, respected, and admired. He was the GOAT of his generation. Think Bernard Odote (Kenya’s), Aliko Dangote (Africa’s), and Elon Musk (World’s) richest rolled into one.

But in a single day, his empire crumbled. Wealth, family, and servants. Gone!

Unlike Eli, who received three devastating reports, “Israel has fled, your two sons are dead, and the ark of God has been captured” and fell backward to his death (1 Sam 4:18)

Job fell forward in worship…

“The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be His name.” Job 1:21

His response reminds us that faith isn’t about getting answers. It’s about staying anchored. We studied Job 2:1-13 in three parts:

• The Enemy Strikes Again (vs.1-8)
• Love is Tested by Pain & Loss (vs.9-10)
• Silence Speaks the Loudest (vs.11-13)

1️⃣ When the Enemy Strikes Again – Faith Under Fire

Job chapter 2 opens in heaven’s courtroom. God calls Job faithful. Satan disagrees. Permission is granted (to afflict him). But, within limits.

Boils cover Job’s body. The greatest man of the East now sits in ashes. Scraping his skin with broken pottery.

I shared my story. January 2025 came with job loss. By March, my wife was taken ill. It was as if life decided to see how many chapters of Job we could fit into one household 🔁:

When one storm quieted, another began.

We made rounds from one medical specialist to another. 🩺 Dermatologist, Gastroenterologist, Nutritionist, and Rheumatologist.

Chasing a name for our pain.

Job’s story asks a piercing question: When your health fails, your finances falter, and your strength runs dry, will your faith still stand?

2️⃣ When Love Is Tested by Pain and Loss – Faith in Relationships

Pain moved from Job’s possessions to his person, and into his marriage.

His wife, crushed by grief, uttered the only words Scripture records from her:

“Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die.” Job 2:9

Before judging her, imagine her pain. Ten fresh graves of her children. A husband in ashes. And no answers from heaven. She wasn’t cursing 🤬. She was breaking.

I’ve been in that place myself. During my jobless stretch, one of my sons asked: “Dad, aren’t you angry with God?”

My other son. Seeing me home everyday, suggested with childlike honesty, I consider begging in the streets. As if faith had gone broke too. 😢

Children notice pain. Family feels pressure. When loss lingers, faith gets tested. Not just yours, but everyone’s around you.

Job’s reply to his wife was calm, but firm:

“Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?” Job 2:10

Sometimes faith means holding on when the ones you love are letting go. Sometimes you lend your faith to the one who is losing theirs.

3️⃣ When Silence Speaks the Loudest – Faith in Friendship

When Job’s wife fades from the story, three friends appear: Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. They come to comfort him. Extremely shocked, they sit in silence for seven days.

No words. No advice. Just presence. Sometimes the greatest response to pain is silence.

Not long ago, my father-in-law texted me.

His words lit a flame of hope in my heart. ♥️

As that 🔥 hope keeps me standing, I’m passing it on to anyone who might need a reminder today. God still opens doors.

True comfort isn’t about fixing the problem. It’s about sitting in the ashes until hope (of our spouse, children or friend) rises again.

Closing Reflection: Still Standing

From the heights of greatness to the depths of pain, Job’s faith didn’t collapse. It deepened. Because the God who allowed the storm also sustained him through it.

Behind every season of suffering is a higher purpose. Beyond every season of suffering lies a greater blessing.

So if you’re walking through pain today, let this truth settle deep: Job’s ashes were not his ending. They were the soil where deeper trust grew.

Keep standing. Keep trusting. Because even when everything changes, God doesn’t.
