🧪 From Science to Startup: A Biomed Graduate’s Journey

When a Biomedical Science graduate Enrolls in Entrepreneurship School

Accelerating faith-driven entrepreneurship. Building people and systems that grow communities.

I studied diagnostic microbiology and recombinant DNA technology. 🧬

Now I’m learning customer acquisition costs and elevator pitches.

How did I move from microscopes to marketplaces?

From dissecting cells in a lab, to scribbling storyboards

Here’s the story of faith, friction, and enrolling in Sinapis Aspire Launchpad.

The Tension I Didn’t See Coming

Armed with a degree and 2007 optimism

I studied BSc. Biomedical Science and Technology.

The kind of degree that makes relatives nod with pride. 🄲

My transcripts read like a pharmaceutical dictionary:

Recombinant DNA to Revenue Streams. Evolution at its finest

Clinical pathology. Pharmacology. Virology. Immunology. Biomedical instrumentation. Bioinformatics. Biostatistics.

The plan was simple:

White lab coat. Research lab. Hospital corridors. Diagnosing diseases. Discovering treatments. Under a microscope. šŸ”¬

The lab coat years, before life introduced a plot twist

I graduated in 2007.

And promptly got vomited into the real world.

Jobs were scarce. Many of my peers became medical representatives (a.k.a. legalized drug peddlers). Rising through multinational pharmaceutical ranks.

Others joined government, university or corporate roles.

I joined international development (assistance) world.

15 years measuring impact, now building it

For 15 years, I designed, implemented, and measured donor-funded programs across East Africa.

I learned to serve communities. Just, not in lab tests. 🧫

Logical frameworks replaced laboratory reports. Monitoring and evaluation replaced microscopes.

It was stable. Structured. Respectable.

Hangout with U.S. Amb. Ranneberger and McCarter

Then, early 2025, my job ended. Read: One year Since I Lost My Job.

After months of swimming in the sea of job hunting, Growth Communities was born. A storytelling-for-impact enterprise.

Can a scientist pivot into startup storytelling and entrepreneurship?

It turns out, Aspire Launchpad was made for exactly this kind of pivot.

The Icebreaker That Exposed Everything

ā€œWould you rather make lots of money… or marry a beautiful damsel?ā€

Coach Emmanuel, our trainer asked me this question, at Sinapis Aspire Launchpad orientation.

With Valentine’s around the corner, my answer was obvious. 🌹

Humor aside, this silly question underscored a key lesson.

Business isn’t just profit. It’s also about people and partnerships.

Imagine trading a lab coat for a startup mindset. Joining this cohort, I was equal parts curious and amused.

From side hustlers to startup founder

Sinapis’ Aspire Launchpad equips aspiring entrepreneurs with the tools, skills, and mindset.

These are essential to launch and grow sustainable, purpose-driven businesses.

Nine weeks.
Practical tools.
Personal transformation.
Faith integrated into business.

I joined because passion is not a business model.

And creativity without structure becomes an expensive hobby.

Week 1: Knowing Yourself (Before Selling Anything)

Zipporah (Founder, Hallo Balloons), shared her journey.

We dug into our passions, strengths and goals. Yes, even a microbiologist-turned-storyteller has to do some soul-searching.

Coach Emmanuel reframed us immediately:

  1. You are not side-hustlers. You are startup founders.
  2. You didn’t fail, you learned.
  3. Nonprofits? Think social enterprises.

We explored:

  • Our WHY of entrepreneurship
  • SMART goals for nine weeks
  • Working styles (Doer, Leader, Love, Learn)
  • Separating business and personal finances
  • Bootstrapping vs borrowing

Emmanuel challenged us to build partnerships that complement our working style. In other words, find co-founders or contractors to fill our blind spots.

I realized I need a photographer-videographer, a design-thinking coach, and even a financial mentor on this storytelling startup team.

Translation: I cannot scale alone.

Daniel (right) my friend who said, “Check out Sinapis.”

Then came the punchline:

ā€œWhile your business starts with you, it shouldn’t end with you.ā€

That sentence destabilized my creative ego, in the best way. God didn’t put us on Earth just to founder, but to build lasting impact.

By the end of Week 1, I’d sketched my ideal customer.

Would my blog readers buy storytelling services? Perhaps authors, churches, schools, or organizations needing communication support. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Week 2: Knowing Your Customer (Not Just Yourself)

2026 Rolls-Royce Phantom

This was hard for me. 😣

As creatives, we often build from what we love. But, businesses exist to solve customer problems.

Even Jesus knew His target audience. He came to seek and save the lost

We learned to:

  • Profile ideal customers (demographics + psychographics)
  • Identify pain points and alternatives
  • Distinguish features vs benefits
  • Understand B2C, B2B, and B2G
  • Develop elevator pitches
  • Follow the customer’s heart, not ours

Rolls Royce doesn’t advertise on billboards.

Why? Because they know exactly where and who their (wealthy) customers are, and that’s enough

I realized I need to meet customers where they are. For some might not even know they need a storyteller yet!

That challenged me.

Chasing friends and family who don’t need your service is exhausting. Clarity attracts the right buyers. Or so, they say!

Week 3: Getting the Relationship Right

Coca-Cola, ‘It’s The Real Thing’

By week 3, the focus was customer relationships. Keep your customer base. Don’t just chase new ones.

We learned, it’s 7x cheaper to retain a customer than win a new one.

Here, science met psychology. We learned:

  • Relational marketing vs advertising
  • Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) vs Lifetime Value (LTV)
  • Lead generation and pipeline management
  • Funnel thinking šŸ¤”
  • Freemium vs Premium models
  • Under-promise, over-deliver

For a former microbiologist, this felt like learning a new language, but a thrilling one.

We analyzed businesses like Think Twice Second Hand Clothing. What is their value-add?

Then discussed why Coca-Cola still advertises, despite global dominance. Answer? Their competition isn’t soda.

It’s every beverage. Bottled water, iced tea and fruit juice. Waiting to see if they’ll venture into yoghurt, dawa (concoction) or uji power. 🤣

Perspective shifts everything.

As a writer, my comfort zone of blog posts is now being nudged toward:

  • TikTok
  • Podcasts
  • Video storytelling

If you see me experimenting with YouTube shorts, please clap. Don’t laugh.

The Alumni Moment That Hit Home

Francis Ayieko (Founder, Op-Ed Experts), shared his journey.

Trained in Land Economics.
Spent 10+ years in print journalism.
Failed first business attempt.
Returned better prepared, after Sinapis training and coaching.

Now he ghostwrites and trains busy professionals, as an Op-Ed expert.

His insight:

ā€œIf you want money, solve people’s problems. If you want more money, solve rich people’s problems.ā€

He built a writing business. Not capital intensive, but strategically structured.

Listening to him, I saw my future, right in front of me! šŸ¤—

I’m charting Growth Communities forward. Honing our story packages. Formalizing operations in Kenya (and beyond).

And translating passion into profit with purpose.

So What Is Sinapis Really Doing?

Renewable energy, agribusiness, creatives and one confused biomedical scientist

Three weeks in, I’m unlearning old assumptions.

Science taught me to prove theorems. Business demands I prove value. But some lab habits pay off. I set measurable goals.

I am deconstructing what I know about success. Uncovering blind spots, and re-prioritizing faith alongside finance.

My passion for healing through stories is now paired with market-savvy tools. I also have a trusted cohort of 17 peers.

A solar-energy innovator. A social enterprise founder. HR consultant. An agribusiness startup. After-school kids activities. An EdTech developer. besides an Events planner. 🤩

Even Gen Z creatives in photo and videography, fashion and music were there! Each one brought a dream that went beyond spreadsheets.

Sinapis isn’t just teaching business. It is:

  • Reframing identity
  • Integrating faith with enterprise
  • Equipping founders to build scalable systems
  • Building community among entrepreneurs
  • Emphasizing service before profit

It is teaching me that discipline, faith, and community are the missing reagents in my entrepreneurial formula.

If you’re at the bench wondering how to mix science, faith, and startup savvy, consider this your lab invitation.

It’s practical. Intense. Stretching.

And humbling.

Who Should Consider Aspire Launchpad?

Nine weeks of structured stretching
  • Idea-stage founders unsure where to start
  • Early-stage entrepreneurs seeking structure
  • Creatives struggling to scale
  • Professionals pivoting into business
  • Faith-driven leaders wanting alignment between purpose and profit
  • Anyone tired of guessing and ready to build intentionally

What happens when faith meets business discipline?

Looping Back

So, how did a biomed graduate end up learning about funnels and customer acquisition costs?

Maybe the lab coat wasn’t the final identity. Maybe the microscope trained me to observe carefully.

Maybe the 15-year career in monitoring and evaluation trained me to measure what matters.

And maybe entrepreneurship is simply the next experiment. 🧪

This time, the hypothesis is simple: Build people. Build systems. Grow communities.

And if you ask me again whether I’d choose money or the damsel? I’d say this:

The right partnership, with purpose, faith, and structure, compounds better than either alone.

Comment Prompt:

Have you ever felt tension between what you studied and what you are becoming?

Would you consider structured mentorship to bridge that gap?
